Launch Hosts “Eagle’s Nest” – A Conversation Between Investors and Start-ups

Earlier this week, Launch had the opportunity to host one of the Make-IT in Africa BotswanaUP Startup Connect Week sessions between Angel Investors and Startups. Our Modiri Mogende had a conversation, 'Eagle's Nest' with the Angel Network Botswana, represented by Aditya Raja Ram and Mythri ("My3") Sambasivan-George (FCCA, FCPA, CGMA-ACMA), and eCommerce Startup, ponatshegoonlinemarket.bw co-founder Motshidisi Joseph Ngaiti.

Some of the key takeaways focused on the importance of managing the relationship between angels and founders, “it’s a marriage, so it is important to ensure that you are a fit during the courting stages” - Sambasivan-George.
Motshidisi Joseph Ngaiti highlighted the need for founders to understand the fundamental business numbers before approaching angels for investment, "beyond the idea, we had to know our numbers, operational costs, revenue, margins, profitability and all. This helps you truly understand the value of your business."
Ram greatly emphasised the importance of founders to continue holding the largest equity in their startups, "if an angel approaches you and wants to invest in your business for a majority stake, I'd advise you to walk away. We want the founder to retain the majority for them to continue being fully committed to the growth of the business."
